Lower School Partners with Mobile Meals to Serve the Spartanburg Community
This October, Oakbrook Preparatory’s Lower School is partnering with Mobile Meals, a local ministry that delivers meals and friendship to homebound seniors across Spartanburg County. During Chapel this week, students learned how Mobile Meals volunteers not only provide food but also share companionship and encouragement with those who may be isolated or unable to leave their homes.
As part of this partnership, our students will participate in a hands-on, schoolwide service-learning project designed to integrate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) principles with real-world community impact.
Each Lower School student will bring home a Mobile Meals coinbank shaped like a delivery van and is encouraged to collect spare change throughout the month. Coinbanks should be returned to school by Wednesday, October 22.
A Collaborative, Cross-Grade Learning Experience
This project brings together every grade level in meaningful ways:
- Third and Fourth Grade: Students will assemble the Mobile Meals coinbank vans for all Lower School classes.
- Kindergarten: Students will sort collected coins by type—pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters—reinforcing key math concepts about money and attributes.
- First Grade: Students will count dimes and nickels, practicing skip counting, addition, and an introduction to multiplication.
- Second Grade: Students will count pennies and quarters, exploring the concept of fourths and adding larger sums.
- K3–4th Grade: All students will have the opportunity to create colorful, encouraging cards that will be delivered to Spartanburg seniors alongside their Mobile Meals deliveries.
Through this project, our students are learning that service and academics go hand in hand. By combining math, creativity, and compassion, they are discovering that even small acts—like collecting spare change—can make a big difference in our community.
Oakbrook is proud to foster a love of learning and service that reflects the heart of Jesus. We look forward to seeing how our students’ generosity and teamwork bless others this month!
