More Than a Season: Oakbrook’s First Flag Football Team Builds a New Tradition
As Oakbrook Preparatory School’s inaugural flag football season draws to a close, the team has already accomplished far more than adding a new sport to Oakbrook Athletics.
What began last spring as an idea to give more students an opportunity to compete has grown into a season filled with Friday Night Lights, a historic first victory, stronger friendships, and renewed school spirit. For the young men who became Oakbrook’s first flag football team, this season has laid the foundation for a promising new tradition.
The idea began taking shape following Oakbrook’s IGNITE event last spring. Athletic Director Kyle Roberts knew there were boys looking for an opportunity to participate in a fall sport, including students who were interested in football but not necessarily tackle football.
When the South Carolina Independent School Association announced its new regions, Roberts contacted athletic directors at schools without tackle football programs. Approximately 25 schools fell into that category, and several expressed interest in forming a flag football league.
Oakbrook’s new program comes as flag football is experiencing tremendous growth across the country and around the world. Approximately 20 million people now play the sport worldwide, including more than 4.1 million young athletes in the United States—a 50% increase since 2020. That momentum will reach the world’s largest athletic stage in 2028, when men’s and women’s flag football make their Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Games.
The athletic directors began meeting regularly to establish rules, determine field dimensions, and create a schedule. Although the distance between participating schools presented travel challenges, they remained committed to making the league possible.
At Oakbrook, the goal was to create an exciting Friday Night Lights experience while giving students a place to compete, grow, and belong. Even players interested in eventually playing tackle football understood that flag football could provide a strong foundation for the future.
The Knights quickly embraced the opportunity, building relationships through practices, road trips, and games. Along the way, they also learned how to depend on one another, persevere through challenges, and compete as a team.
One of the season’s defining moments came when Oakbrook earned its first flag football victory with an exciting 40–30 win over Faith Christian. The historic night gave the Knights more than a mark in the win column—it gave them confidence and showed them what they could accomplish together.
“The energy was electric on our first Friday night under the lights,” Roberts said. “Winning that first game allowed our boys to understand that they can do hard things. They can face adversity and rise to the challenge.”
Players have emerged as playmakers throughout the season, but the team’s growth has extended beyond athletic performance. Roberts and Coach Braswell are also focused on helping the young men carry the lessons they have learned into the classroom and the wider Oakbrook community.
“For Coach Braswell and me, we now turn our attention to helping these young men become leaders in the school as well,” Roberts said.
The excitement surrounding the inaugural team has also brought renewed energy to Oakbrook Athletics. After a challenging year for several of the boys’ programs, the success of flag football has helped build confidence and enthusiasm that Roberts hopes will continue throughout the school year.
“They are just beginning to see the fruits of the labor they put into the offseason and preseason, and it is our hope that that fruit and positivity will carry into the winter and spring seasons,” Roberts said.
Oakbrook’s first flag football season has been about much more than starting a new athletic program. It has given students an opportunity to compete, strengthened friendships, and shown a group of young men what is possible when they work together and refuse to give up.
The Knights will play their final regular-season home game on Friday, September 11, at 5:30 p.m. Oakbrook families and fans are invited to fill the stands, cheer on the team, and wear red, white, and blue as the school remembers the lives lost, honors the heroes who responded, and recognizes all those affected by the events of September 11, 2001.
