Get To Know: Karen Huminski

Name: Karen Huminski

Position: Middle School Social Studies Teacher

How long have you been at Oakbrook: This fall will be my 20th year teaching at OPS. Both my children (now 32 and 29) are graduates of the school so Oakbrook has been and still is a huge part of my life. I taught MS English for 18 years before “retiring”. However, I just couldn’t stay away and after only a year, I returned to teach MS social studies and LOVE it!

How do you like to spend your free time: One of my hobbies is running, which at 62 is definitely challenging. The attached picture is from 2020 when I completed the Disney Princess Challenge for my 60th birthday: a 10K one day followed by a half marathon the next. My daughter, Claire, is the one who encouraged and competed with me.

What do you love most about teaching: My favorite part of teaching is helping young people overcome difficulties and obstacles and to share the truth of God’s faithfulness to them. I also love learning alongside my students and encouraging them to take chances and not be afraid of challenges. I always tell my students that together we can do this!
