Oakbrook Preparatory School World Languages

Preschool / Lower School

All students, beginning at age 5, participate in world language class.

Grades K4 through 4 take a "survey class" of four languages (Chinese, Spanish, & German).

Students can learn to hear and speak world languages with greater proficiency when they begin as young children. By the age of twelve, most people have lost their ability to speak a second language without an accent. Our students experience a sampling of language and culture (Spanish, Chinese, & German) at grades K5-3rd grade. Third and fourth graders choose one focus language (Spanish, Chinese, or German) and study it with enthusiasm. Currently, fifth graders choose from Spanish or German.

Middle School

Language studies for middle school begin to become more focused. Seventh graders move from a two-day class to a three-day class. In Lower School, their language studies were mostly oral. In middle school they begin to do more written work. They begin to use a book or workbook for the first time to reinforce the written language.

Students in middle school choose Spanish or German to study for the remainder of their stay at Oakbrook.

For more in-depth development, German I and Spanish I are offered for high school credit beginning in grade 8.

Second and third year Spanish and German are offered for further study. AP Spanish and AP German are also currently offered for possible college credit.
