Mission:

Philosophy:

Student-Athlete. Athletics teaches lessons that carry over to the classroom and life and there is room to balance both athletics and academics and do well in both. Student athletes are responsible to balance the commitments of the classroom with the commitments of the sport. Our athletic program will provide athletic competitive experiences that will enable as many students as possible to participate on at least one athletic team. We do not require students to participate in athletics. However, we do encourage all students to participate in some type of physical activity.

Athletic Skills. Coaches are responsible for teaching and expecting athletes to properly execute the fundamentals of the game. Athletes are responsible to make a commitment to practice these skills, to attend all practices, and to respect the authority of the coach. Competition and game experiences teach athletes to recognize situations, make decisions, and take responsibility for consequences.

Teamwork. Working together as a team, even in the “individual” type sports, will be encouraged at every opportunity. Each athlete must be eager, not just willing, to sacrifice personal interests or glory for the welfare of the team.

Sportsmanship. Good sportsmanship covers the concepts of fair play, respect for those in authority, and integrity on and off the playing field. Oakbrook strives to be known for fielding competitive, well-disciplined and well-coached teams who know how to win with humility and lose graciously.

Enjoyment/Success. Enjoyment of the game, or success, is attained when the athlete knows that he/she did everything within the limits of his ability to become the very best that he or she is capable of becoming. While winning events is important and a goal for all teams, success in coaching or playing will not be based on the number of athletic events won or lost. Winning is a by-product of the enjoyment/success of developing athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Oakbrook supports a growing and active Fellowship of Christian Athlete (FCA) organization. The mission of FCA is “to present to athletes and coaches, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church.”

Coaching Qualifications & Responsibilities

Hiring staff to be responsible for coaching duties serves several purposes: it offers more opportunity for salary compensation; it solidifies the importance of the program among the parents and students; it complies with the accreditation requirements; and it adds liability protection.

Head Coach

Qualifications
1. The coach conducts himself in a Christian manner whether on or off the competitive field. Coaches must demonstrate and exemplify self-control and respect for others. Coaches must be able to discuss Christian beliefs with athletes. Coaches must realize that he/she has a tremendous impact on the athlete with respect to the athlete’s attitude to life, the sport, and Christianity.
2. The coach must genuinely like and be able to work with middle school and/or high school students by forming relationships with the student athletes and encouraging each athlete to develop individual and team skills required for the game.
3. The coach should have a good knowledge of the game and the rules and be able to teach the fundamentals of the game.
4. The coach must be willing and able to commit the time and effort needed for the team during the season. The time commitment includes consistent time for practices and games, time to plan and prepare practices and time to communicate to athletes and parents throughout the playing season.
5. The coach must agree with and support Oakbrook’s Athletic Philosophy.

Responsibilities
1. Know the academic and athletic qualifications for students to participate and continue participation on an athletic team. Work with the Athletic Director to encourage students to maintain academic requirements, to excel in sportsmanship conduct, and to be leaders within the school and role models to younger students. You may expect high standards of character from team captains and players who have previously been chosen for the Silver Sword Award.
2. Must attend and plan daily practice schedules. Practices must be designed to accomplish the Oakbrook Athletic Philosophy. Daily practice schedule may also include devotion and prayer. Please notify the Athletic Director if you have a conflict with a practice or game time and if you will have the assistant coach conduct the practice/game, need assistance, or need to cancel the event.
3. Come to practice and games dressed appropriately for the sport, prepared, and with a complete focus on your team. Start and end practices on time. Plan adequate time for travel to away games.
4. Check email, voicemail and/or mailboxes daily during the season for schedule updates/changes and communications from Athletic Director and/or school administration.
5. Set up a parent and student meeting for your team prior to the first competition date. Review the athletic handbook. Hand out a copy of your team schedule for practices and games, and review expectations for practice and game participation. Notify parents about how to get in touch with you if needed.
6. Make sure that Medical Examination forms and Agreement for Participation forms for all athletes have been turned into the Athletic Department. Athletes without a Medical Exam signed by a licensed physician will not be eligible to participate in athletic practices or games.
7. Keep gamebook and player statistics for competition and record all results. Turn in game results to the Athletic Director that evening by email or phone message when the AD is not present at the game.
8. Notify the Athletic Director of equipment or gym needs or changes in schedules as soon as possible.
9. Keep your team notebook with completed copies of Green Cards and first aid kit with you at all practices and games.
10. Discipline players as needed when a situation occurs in a fair and just manner. Be consistent with all players concerning discipline. Please report instances of disrespectful or unsportsmanlike behavior to the Athletic Director. Plan for discipline and notify the parents. Please be willing to work with the faculty when a teacher must discipline a student and that discipline impacts practice or game time.
11. Determine the optimal minimum and maximum number of players for your team. If more players than the maximum try out for the team, you may select/cut players to reach the optimal number of players. If less than a minimum number of players try out for a team, discuss with the Athletic Director the feasibility of fielding a team.
12. At the end of the season, each coach will meet with the Athletic Director to evaluate the season, team, and program with recommendations for improvements for the following year and your desire to continue or not continue coaching.

Criteria for Athletic Participation

All athletes must be full-time students at Oakbrook Preparatory School.

All athletes must be academically eligible to participate on an athletic team. SCISA Academic Requirements state that a student in grade 9-12 must take and pass at least four (4), one unit CORE Courses or any five (5) one unit courses each semester to be eligible. Students below the 9th grade playing a varsity sport, must pass four (4) subjects each grading period/semester. At Oakbrook, students must maintain an overall C-average and any student failing a course will be evaluated by the School Director and Athletic Director. For middle school academic eligibility, any student failing a class or not maintaining a C average will be evaluated by the Middle School Director and Athletic Director. Students not maintaining grades or keeping up with assignments during the season will have a parent conference to determine academic eligibility for the remainder of the season.

Each athlete must have two forms completed before participating in practice or games: a Medical Examination Form completed with physician’s signature and an Athletic Participation form completed with parent’s signature. These forms can be found in the main office or with the Athletic Director. One form per student takes care of all sports for that school year.

Any student interested in trying out for a team must be at the first practice of the season. The coach must be notified ahead of time if the student is going to miss the first practice for an excusable reason (illness, death in family, etc.)

Once a student has joined a team, he/she has committed to that team until the last game is completed. One must be at every practice for the whole practice unless excused for: doctor and dentist appointment, personal sickness, death in the family, previously scheduled church commitment. One must notify the coach as soon as possible of any conflicts. Failure to notify the coach may impact playing time.

Any uniforms or equipment issued to an athlete are the athlete’s responsibility. Lost or damaged equipment and/or lost uniforms will be charged to the athlete. School uniforms are only to be worn for games, not practices or other functions.

In order to participate in a practice or game for that day, the student must be in school for at least four classes of that day. The only exceptions are for previously scheduled doctor or dentist appointments.

For game days, students may wear the accepted Oakbrook regular school attire or may purchase and wear the “Game Day” shirt.

Athletes must abide by the school’s policies and procedures for transportation. Any practice held off of Oakbrook property is still considered a part of the school. Transportation for away games will be organized by the coach or Athletic Director.

Athletes’ Code of Conduct

Oakbrook athletes are expected to treat coaches and teammates, along with opponents, officials, and visitors, with respect. We encourage athletes to play hard within the rules of the game, winning with humility and losing without excuses. Athletes are expected to respect the property and equipment of Oakbrook and our opponents. Always remember that as an Oakbrook athlete, you represent our school, our coaches, and your families as well as yourself.

Word to our Parents

Oakbrook Prep encourages parents to support their child in the child’s athletic involvement. Please make sure your child is on time for practices and games. Your attendance at games is important to your child and your positive encouragement has direct impact on your child’s performance. If at any time you or your child has a concern or question, have the child/athlete talk to his/her coach first. If your concern is not resolved, then you may call the coach yourself. Any concerns not resolved after talking with the coach may be brought to the Athletic Director to set up a meeting with all parties involved.

Word to our Spectators

Oakbrook Prep welcomes athletic competition and school spirit for our teams and we encourage parents, family, friends and students to attend athletic events and cheer our team. We view all expressions of school spirit as reflections of our school. Each of us has the responsibility to encourage Christian sportsmanship including cheering for our team’s success and not our opponent’s failures, welcoming a visiting team and their spectators, and showing respect for officials.

Only members of the athletic team are permitted to sit on a team’s bench. Only timers and scorekeepers may sit with at scorer’s table/bench. Food and drink are not allowed in the Oakbrook gym and please throw away your trash after games.

"Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers."
Psalm 1:1-3
